Caring For Your Axolotl
DESCRIPTION: Axolotls are a freshwater amphibian native to Mexico, which make ideal low maintenance pets. If cared for correctly should live for up to 15 years and can grow to a length of 12 inches. Axolotls are available in many colours including black and olive being their wild colours, but many colours are now available including white, gold, albino and pied.
HOUSING: An aquarium 24 x 12 x 12 is the ideal size for your pet axolotl. Although when younger, a small tank will be suitable but by the time your axolotl is 1 year old they should have grown to a size of approximately 20 cm and will require room to move and explore the tank.
WATER CONDITIONS: Axolotls are a cold water fish and do not require artificial heating of their tank. During winter they may become less active and reduce the amount of food they eat but this will only be for a short period. Axolotls can be messy and will require regular water changes to ensure their water conditions are clean at all times. A PH reading of 7.2 – 7.6 is ideal.
FEEDING: Axolotls are not very fussy eaters and will eat many things including beef heart, mealworms, earthworms, brine shrimp and axolotl pellets. We recommend Aquafish Axolotl Pellets but it is advised you ask the pet shop what they were feeding your axolotl in the shop.
